SCOTLAND SUMMARY – 2018

Scotland was the longest stay during my first solo European trip in 2018. I am Scottish on my mother’s side, so this trip was a family heritage trip.

Scotland is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I spent seven weeks here and would have seen much more had I enough funds. Although it was easy and convenient, my stay at an AirBnb in Glasgow was too long. There were many other places to see that I would have taken several days for the different locales, but I was locked in to the AirBnb so, next time!

I met a very nice lady, Helen, in Glasgow at a meetup there and was lucky enough to be invited for a night in Falkirk with her on my way to Edinburgh. She showed my around Falkirk where I saw the the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies. And then a visit to Queensferry.

I also hooked up with a couple of ladies on Couchsurfing; Anna from Austria and Kirsty from Sri Lanka; they were looking for someone to join them on a trip to the Isle of Skye. We rented a car and headed north. Stopped in Luss for lunch and then Glencoe, Fort William, Glenfinnan and Kyle of Lochalsh before arriving to Isle of Skye. I stayed at a hostel in Portree and visited The Old Man of Storr, Neist Point, the Fairy Pools, and took a ferry to Raasay Island.

A took a couple of day trips from Glasgow; one to Oban and one to Stirling. The last great adventure was a trip to St. Andrews, Anstruther and the Isle of May to see some puffins.

My Scottish heritage became a big part of this trip. My family’s clan, Clan Colquhoun (pronounced ka-hoon), hails from Luss where I spent several days celebrating the 2018 Colquhoun Highland Games. Evening cocktails at the Clan Chief’s home, marching in the parade, enjoying the highland games and competitions, a ceilidh (pronounce kay-lee), a boat ride on Loch Lomond and touring around the quaint Luss Village.
